Committments: The Tallgrass Artist Residency will invite 8 artists/artist teams to participate in two-week residency periods between May and September, 2019 in the Flint Hills of Kansas. Residents are expected to give a public program of their choosing during this two-week period at one of our partner venues. Residents are also expected to participate in a group exhibition and artist symposium on Saturday, October 12, 2019. Residents are given lodging at Matfield Station in the small community of Matfield Green, Kansas for 10 nights during their residency and up to 2 nights during the artist symposium events.
Who Can Apply: This residency seeks to create connection and conversation across the Great Plains. We welcome applications from artists/art teams who currently live in a place that is ecologically considered prairie (← click the link to see a general map of this area). Ideal applicants will have a strong body of work with a unique voice or perspective, a dedication to exploring place, and an interest in participating in a contemporary dialogue. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and career levels, media and practice. We're not currently accepting applications from previous artists-in-residence in the program. **Because of our rural setting, having your own transportation during the residency is essential**
Program Description: The Tallgrass Artist Residency is a unique program that offers individual artists/artist teams time and space to retreat and research in a rural, tallgrass prairie setting. Though the experience is rural, it is not meant to be isolating. Artists are provided lodging in the small community of Matfield Green, 20 miles from Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve and home to a growing number of artists and thinkers. Our Matfield Green team welcomes residents and helps in orientation to the Flint Hills region. Some of our regional partners include the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, The Volland Store, The Bank Art Space, and Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art.
Applications are due by March 1, with notification by the end of March.
